Numerology: your core number

Numerology (生命灵数) begins simply: take the birth date apart, add it up, reduce it, and you are left with a number from 1 to 9. That is the core number, also called the primary character.

The method is entirely open. You can work yours out right now.

Three steps to the core number

Step one: add together every digit of your birth year, month and day.

Step two: if the result has two digits, add those two together.

Step three: keep going until a single digit is left.

Take 15 June 1990: 1+9+9+0+6+1+5 = 31, then 3+1 = 4. The core number is 4.

What 1 to 9 each describe

1 Independent and decided, used to making up their own mind — and used to carrying things alone.

2 Sensitive and caring, good at smoothing things over, inclined to put their own needs last.

3 Expressive and inventive, lifts a room; concentration is the weak point.

4 Practical, orderly, worth relying on; flexibility is the thing to practise.

5 Loves freedom, wants to try everything, several things at once, and dreads being pinned down.

6 A heavy sense of duty, family first, apt to pick up other people's problems as their own.

7 A thinker who needs time alone, and is slow to trust.

8 Driven and effective, cares how it turns out, and is hard on themselves.

9 Idealistic and deeply empathetic, apt to shortchange themselves for the greater good.

Once you have the number

The core number is only the start. The same birth date also yields the seat code, the subconscious code and the family code, plus twelve paired codes — that is the part that actually describes a person in any detail.

The numbers carry elements too: 1 and 6 are Metal, 2 and 7 Water, 3 and 8 Fire, 4 and 9 Wood, 5 Earth. That layer is what gets used when you look at how two people fit together.

Common questions

Does the core number change?

No. Your birth date fixes it for life. What changes is the annual number, which is different every year.

Should master numbers like 11 and 22 be kept?

Schools differ on this. This site reduces everything to a single digit, which is what the app shows.

What if my core number contradicts my MBTI?

It is not really a contradiction — the two look at different layers. Where they point the same way, trust it more. Where they do not, it usually means the outward you and the inward you are not the same shape.
